Microsoft updated the PL-900 skills measured on 24 July 2026. Copilot Studio agents are now a full domain at 20-25% of the exam, Power Pages is gone, and the business value domain shrank to 5-10%. If you are preparing from a course or video made before that date, part of what you are studying is no longer on the exam. This guide covers what changed, how to split your time across the five domains, and the exam-day rules.
TL;DR
- The exam is 45 minutes, with a passing score of 700 out of 1000
- Five domains: business value (5-10%), the Power Platform environment (20-25%), Power Apps (20-25%), Power Automate (20-25%), and Copilot Studio agents (20-25%)
- Power Pages and the hands-on "build a canvas app" and "build a model-driven app" objectives were removed on 24 July 2026
- If you fail, you can retake after 24 hours, then wait 14 days between later attempts, with at most five attempts in 12 months
- PL-900 is not a prerequisite for any role-based certification, but it prepares you for them

What Changed in the July 2026 Update?
Microsoft publishes a change log with the study guide. Compared with the version before 24 July 2026:
| Skill area | Change |
|---|---|
| Describe the business value of Microsoft Power Platform | Share of the exam decreased |
| Manage the Microsoft Power Platform environment | Share of the exam increased |
| Demonstrate the capabilities of Power Apps | Share of the exam decreased; the "build a canvas app" and "build a model-driven app" objectives were removed, and "describe how to build basic apps" was added |
| Demonstrate the capabilities of Power Automate | Share of the exam increased |
| Power Pages objectives | Removed |
| Describe features and capabilities of agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio | New domain |
The practical effect is that Copilot Studio moves from a minor topic to a domain worth up to a quarter of the exam, and anything you studied only for Power Pages no longer counts. Check the date on any prep material before you rely on it.
What Does Each Domain Cover?
Use the weights to decide where your time goes, and the objectives below as a checklist.
Domain 1: Describe the business value of Microsoft Power Platform (5-10%)
The smallest domain asks you to describe the value of the main services: Power Apps for building applications, Power Automate for automating processes, Dataverse for organizing business data, connectors for integrating services and data, Power Pages for building websites, generative AI features in the platform, and Copilot Studio for creating agents. Learn what each product is for and move on; this domain is worth only 5-10%.
Domain 2: Manage the Microsoft Power Platform environment (20-25%)
This domain has two parts. The first is Dataverse: how it differs from traditional databases, tables, columns and relationships, table forms and views, business logic options including Power Fx, and using AI to create and edit tables and columns. The second is administration and governance: environments, the Power Platform security model, data privacy and accessibility guidelines, monitoring and analytics, and application lifecycle management with Power Platform pipelines.
Domain 3: Demonstrate the capabilities of Power Apps (20-25%)
Expect to compare use cases and capabilities for canvas apps, model-driven apps, Plan designer, and code apps. The second part covers how to build basic apps: using AI to create a canvas app, using AI to create a model-driven app, and creating AI-powered apps with the vibe experience. Know which app type fits which scenario.
Domain 4: Demonstrate the capabilities of Power Automate (20-25%)
This domain covers use cases for cloud and desktop flows, and Power Automate scenarios for approvals, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, Forms, and document automation. It also covers connector triggers and actions for cloud flows, and using AI to create and modify cloud and desktop flows.
Domain 5: Describe features and capabilities of agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio (20-25%)
The new domain covers building agents: use cases for agents, conversation paths built with topics, knowledge sources, tools including MCP servers and agent flows, and publishing agents through channels. It also covers managing agents: Microsoft Agent 365 use cases and capabilities, monitoring agent usage and adoption, and agent evaluations.
Domains 2, 3, 4 and 5 are 20-25% each. Together they make up most of the exam. Give each of them real time, and treat Domain 1 as a short review.
How Should I Study for the PL-900?
Start with Microsoft's own study guide for the exam and treat its objectives as your checklist. For each bullet, write a one-line definition and one example in your own words. If you cannot, that objective goes on your gap list.
Then make the concepts concrete. Open the products and try them: create a table in Dataverse, build a simple canvas app, construct a model-driven app, set up a cloud flow, and prototype a basic Copilot Studio agent. You do not need working solutions; you need to see the decisions each tool asks you to make.
Finish with practice questions, and review the explanation for every option, not only the one you picked. Re-check your gap list after each set and spend the last days on what is still weak.
Microsoft also offers a free practice assessment, and an exam sandbox where you can try the question types and the exam interface before test day.
How Do I Turn the Objectives into a Study Checklist?
Microsoft's study guide lists the objectives under each domain, and they are the most reliable description of what the exam can ask. Copy them into a document and rate each one after every practice set: can you explain it, give an example, and say when you would choose it over the alternative? A few of the objectives that candidates often leave until last:
- Describe the options for business logic in Dataverse, including Power Fx
- Describe application lifecycle management with Microsoft Power Platform pipelines
- Describe use cases for and capabilities of Plan designer and code apps
- Describe how to use AI to create and modify cloud flows and desktop flows
- Describe how tools, including MCP servers and agent flows, are used in agents
- Describe how to monitor Copilot Studio agent usage and adoption, and describe agent evaluations
Anything you cannot explain goes to the top of your list, weighted by its domain. A gap in a 20-25% domain costs more than a gap in the 5-10% business value domain, so spend your time accordingly. Re-rate yourself after each timed practice set, and use the last stretch before the exam on whatever is still weak rather than re-reading what you already know.
A simple order works well. Start with Domain 2, because Dataverse and environments underpin the apps, flows and agents in the other domains. Then take Power Apps and Power Automate, where the exam asks you to choose between app types and between flow types for a described scenario. Finish with Copilot Studio, which is new enough that you should expect to learn it from scratch, and use Domain 1 as a short review at the end.
What Kinds of Questions Should I Practise?
The exam sandbox lets you try the question types and the interface Microsoft uses, and Microsoft notes that some exams include interactive components. Spend a little time there before you sit the exam so the format is familiar. For content, practise questions that describe a business problem and ask which product, app type or flow type solves it, since that is the skill the objectives describe: describing use cases, capabilities and value.
When you review a question, ask why each of the other options is wrong, not only why the right one is right. This habit turns recognition into the ability to choose under exam conditions, and it is the best use of a 45-minute exam where time is short.
Where Can I Practice with Realistic PL-900 Questions?
Microsoft's practice assessment is available through AI Skills Navigator, where you need to sign in to launch it, and the exam sandbox shows the interface. Use both before you pay for anything else.
CertCompanion's PL-900 practice questions give you scenario-based practice with explanations for every option. Start with the 30 free questions to see which domains need work. Because the exam changed on 24 July 2026, check the domain you are practising against the current skills outline above.

How Does a Realistic PL-900 Question Work?
An IT administrator at ProLogistics Inc. is responsible for setting up a new Power Platform deployment. Her first task is to create a new, isolated area where the logistics team can build and test their inventory tracking app without affecting any other part of the business. Which administrative portal should she use to create and manage this segregated container?
- A. Power Platform admin center
- B. Microsoft 365 admin center
- C. Dynamics 365 admin center
- D. Azure Active Directory admin center
Show the answer and the reasoning
Correct answer: A. Power Platform admin center
The correct place to perform this task is the Power Platform admin center. This is the central hub for managing the high-level structure of the platform. Creating, deleting, and securing environments, which are the containers that segregate apps and data, is a core function of the Power Platform admin center.
Here is why the other options are incorrect:
- The Azure Active Directory admin center is used for managing users, groups, and identity, not Power Platform environments.
- The Microsoft 365 admin center is used for managing user licenses and subscriptions.
- The Dynamics 365 admin center is for managing specific Dynamics 365 instances, not for general environment creation.
What Should I Know About Exam Day and Retakes?
You have 45 minutes, and the exam is proctored. Some exams include interactive components, and Microsoft publishes a page on exam duration and the exam experience if you want details. Register with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work or school account, because exam records tied to an organizational account can be lost if you leave that organization.
If the exam is not offered in your language, you can request an additional 30 minutes. If you need an accommodation, such as extra time or support for assistive devices, you can request one through Microsoft before you book.
If you do not pass, you can retake the exam 24 hours after the first attempt. After that, you wait 14 days between attempts. You cannot take the same exam more than five times within 12 months of your first attempt, and you pay for each retake. A waiver of the waiting period is available only if an internet or equipment failure occurred during the exam and Pearson VUE opened a case.
What Comes After PL-900?
PL-900 is not a prerequisite for any role-based certification, but Microsoft says you can use it to prepare for them. The Microsoft certification practice exams page lists the other exams on CertCompanion if you are planning your next step. If you want more detail on the domains, the earlier PL-900 exam guide covers them.
