SAP-C02 is a 180-minute, 75-question professional exam, and the score you need is fixed: 750 on a scaled 100 to 1000 range. What decides the result is how you read dense architecture scenarios under time pressure. This post covers the numbers that matter, the policies that affect your plan, and a way to practise the reading skill the exam rewards.
TL;DR
- Passing score is 750 on a scaled score (AWS uses 750 for Professional and Specialty exams). No per-domain pass requirement.
- 75 questions in 180 minutes, multiple choice and multiple response. 65 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot questions that are not identified, so treat every question as if it counts.
- AWS recommends 2 or more years of experience using AWS services to design and implement cloud solutions. Your study time depends on how close you are to that.
- Retake wait is 14 calendar days after any failed attempt, with no limit on attempts, but each attempt costs the full fee.

What Score Do You Need to Pass SAP-C02?
The passing score is 750 out of 1000 on a scaled score. Not a percentage of questions correct: a scaled score, which means the difficulty weighting of the specific questions you received affects the final number.
The exam is 75 questions total: 65 scored and 10 unscored. The unscored questions are not identified, so you treat every question as if it counts.
There's a practical implication to the scaled scoring that most candidates don't fully internalize until after they pass. You don't need to get every hard question right. You need to get enough right, weighted correctly. The scoring is compensatory, with no per-domain pass requirement.
Where to Practise with Realistic Questions
This is where the conventional advice misleads people, so pay attention.
AWS publishes official practice resources in Skill Builder, which is the closest match to real exam wording. Use them for final calibration after you have built your reasoning on longer practice sets.
CertCompanion's SAP-C02 practice questions come with detailed explanations that go beyond flagging the right answer. On a SAP-C02 question the correct option is right for a specific reason tied to a specific constraint, and understanding that reasoning is how you transfer the skill to questions you have not seen.
| SAP-C02 question bank | |

| Questions | 592 |
| Single-answer | 457 |
| Select-all-that-apply | 135 (23%) |
| Median explanation length | 204 words |

One non-negotiable habit: review every incorrect answer in full before moving to the next practice set. Read why each wrong option is wrong, not just why the right one is right.
How Hard Is SAP-C02, and How Long Should You Prepare?
The difficulty is in judgment, not recall. AWS recommends 2 or more years of experience using AWS services to design and implement cloud solutions, and the exam asks you to evaluate requirements and recommend an architecture, not to name services. The exam does not test whether you know what Transit Gateway is; it tests whether you can tell when Transit Gateway is the right answer instead of VPC peering, and which sentence in the scenario makes that true.
No official source gives a number of study hours, so plan from your own starting point. If you build on AWS daily, spend your time on scenario practice and on the services you use least. If you do not, build hands-on experience first, because practice questions cannot replace it.
Track your trajectory rather than a single score: are you improving after reviewing explanations, and can you name the deciding constraint in a scenario before you read the options? If your scores stay flat across several sets, the way you review needs to change.
Reasoning Through a SAP-C02 Question
The questions that trip candidates up most aren't obscure-service questions. They're scenarios that embed the deciding constraint so cleanly that a rushed read misses it entirely.
Here is an illustrative example of the pattern (not a real exam question). A question describes a company running a multi-region architecture with strict RTO and RPO requirements. The scenario mentions data sovereignty in the second paragraph, then asks which disaster recovery approach to recommend. Three of the four options satisfy the RTO and RPO; only one also respects the data sovereignty constraint, so that one is the answer. A rushed read matches the RTO and RPO numbers to an option and moves on; a careful read finds the data sovereignty sentence first and uses it to eliminate options.
The next question comes from our practice bank and works the same way. The deciding constraint is "minimal changes to the migrated servers".
A manufacturing company, AutoParts Global, is migrating its on-premises VMware vSphere environment to AWS. A core requirement is to move their existing application servers to Amazon EC2 instances while ensuring that all installed software, operating system settings, and application configurations are perfectly preserved. Minimal changes to the migrated servers are desired. Which set of actions should the solutions architect recommend for this 'lift and shift' migration?
- A. Manually take snapshots of each VMware VM. Convert these snapshots to VMDK files, upload them to Amazon S3, and then use the
ImportSnapshotAPI call to create EBS snapshots. Create AMIs from these EBS snapshots and launch EC2 instances. - B. Deploy AWS DataSync agent on-premises to copy the entire VM disk images (VMDK files) to an S3 bucket. Then, use a custom script to attach these VMDKs as EBS volumes to newly launched EC2 instances and boot from them.
- C. Install the AWS Application Migration Service (AWS MGN) agent on each on-premises VMware VM. Use MGN to continuously replicate the block devices of these VMs to a low-cost staging area in AWS. During the cutover window, instruct MGN to launch target EC2 instances from the replicated data.
- D. Use AWS Backup to back up the on-premises VMware VMs directly to AMIs in AWS. Launch new EC2 instances from these AMIs.
Show the answer and the reasoning
Correct answer: C.
The recommended approach uses AWS Application Migration Service (AWS MGN). MGN is specifically designed for rehosting (lift-and-shift) migrations to AWS. By installing the MGN agent on the source servers (VMware VMs in this case), it performs continuous, block-level data replication to a staging area in AWS. This minimizes downtime as the data is kept in sync. During the cutover, MGN launches and converts the replicated servers into EC2 instances, preserving their OS, applications, and configurations. This is generally the most efficient and least disruptive method for such migrations.
AWS Backup cannot directly back up on-premises VMs into launchable AMIs in this manner. The manual snapshot conversion process involving VMDK files, S3 uploads, and ImportSnapshot API calls is very manual and complex. DataSync is designed for file/object data, not direct block-level replication for VM migration, and booting EC2 instances from raw VMDKs attached as EBS volumes is not a standard or straightforward procedure.
Practice this deliberately. On every practice question you get wrong, identify the constraint sentence first, then ask whether you would have found it under time pressure. If the answer is no, you've found a reading pattern to fix, not a knowledge gap to fill.
Planning for a 180-Minute Exam
Three hours of sustained reasoning is demanding, so plan the day as well as the content. Schedule at the time of day when your reasoning is sharpest, eat beforehand, and decide between the test center and online proctoring on purpose: online proctored exams add technical risk (display issues, VPN reconnects, check-ins) that a test center removes, and a test center gives you a quieter, controlled room for a long exam. If you test online, use a personal laptop without a VPN and run the testing vendor's system test on the exact machine you will use.
Exam appointments can be rescheduled up to 24 hours before the start time, each appointment only twice, and cancelling more than 24 hours ahead refunds the fee; inside 24 hours the delivery fee is charged. Candidates for whom English is a second language can request the ESL +30 minutes accommodation through their AWS Certification account before booking.
What Not to Spend Time On
The exam guide lists what is out of scope, so use it as a filter. Time spent on out-of-scope topics is time taken from service-selection decisions that are in scope, such as Transit Gateway versus PrivateLink or Aurora versus DynamoDB. Be wary of dump sites: they are unreliable and they train recall, while this exam rewards reading the scenario.
The Exam's One Core Skill (and How to Build It)
Every SAP-C02 scenario question works the same way: it gives you a business situation, embeds one or two constraint sentences that determine the correct architecture, and surrounds them with plausible-looking options that would all work in isolation.
The skill is identifying the constraint. "Minimize operational overhead" points toward managed services. "Lowest cost" with variable workload points toward Spot combined with an SQS queue. "Sub-millisecond latency" with key-value access points toward DynamoDB with DAX. "Non-HTTP traffic failover" points toward Global Accelerator, not CloudFront.
You build this skill by reviewing explanations after wrong answers, not by memorizing service feature lists.
One technique worth trying on dense questions: read the answer choices before the full question stem. Identify what distinction the question is testing, whether it is ECS versus Lambda, Spot versus Reserved, or pilot light versus warm standby, then skim the scenario for the constraint that resolves that distinction. This turns a four-paragraph reading exercise into a targeted search.
The same logic applies to migration questions. Know the 7Rs cold. Snow Family selection based on data volume and connectivity is commonly tested. DataSync vs Storage Gateway vs Snow vs Transfer Family requires distinguishing online vs offline and file-based vs block-based: a judgment call the exam tests repeatedly. If you do not have migration experience, a focused study session on each tool's specific use case is worth the time before exam day.
How I'd Actually Structure the Week Before
This isn't a full study plan: the complete prep path lives in the AWS exam prep section. This is purely the 7-day execution window assuming you're already in a solid position on practice sets.
Days 7-5: One complete timed practice exam under real conditions. Review every incorrect answer. No new video content at this stage, only gap analysis and documentation review for services you got wrong.
Days 4-3: The official AWS Skill Builder free 20-question set. This resets your expectations to real exam difficulty and wording after working on harder material. If something here surprises you, spend a focused session on that service category.
Day 2: No practice exams. Read through the official exam guide's in-scope service list once. Verify you know the core use case for every service listed. Rest.
Day 1 (exam day): Eat. Schedule at your peak alertness time. If using a test center, arrive early enough to get settled. If using OnVUE, disable VPN, use a personal laptop rather than a corporate device with SSO, and run the system check on the exact machine you'll sit the exam on.
Budget about 2.5 minutes per question (180 minutes for 75 questions) and flag anything that takes more than 3 minutes so you can return to it with the time you have left.
Take a short mental break every 5 to 10 questions: look away from the screen, breathe, reset. Sustained reasoning needs active management over three hours.
Use the exam interface's tools systematically, for example by marking the constraint sentence before you read the answer choices.
One logistical note: AWS posts results to your AWS Certification account within five business days of the exam.
What the Exam Costs
The exam costs $300 USD. Once you hold any AWS Certification you receive a 50% discount on your next AWS Certification exam, which you can access in your AWS Certification account. A retake costs the full fee again.
